The McGill Student Emergency Response Team (M-SERT) is a volunteer service supported by the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU), whose members provide emergency first aid services to McGill University and the Montreal community.
Our membership includes over 50 amazing student-volunteers who hold a valid certification at the Canadian Red Cross First Responder level. While responding, our team operates in pairs, and carries a range of first aid materials and equipment that counts to over 40 items. We also carry more advanced emergency care equipment such as Epi-Pens, oxygen tanks, cervical collars, and Automated External Defibrillators (AED).
When on scene, MSERT responders are trained to assess many different situations including musculoskeletal and soft-tissue injuries, airway and breathing compromises, intoxication or drug related emergencies, diabetic emergencies, cardiac arrest, and many more. If further medical attention is required, MSERT responders will contact Montreal EMS. Although MSERT deals with patients in many different states and situations, it is a strictly confidential service.
Hours of Operation
Throughout the academic year (September - April), M-SERT provides first aid coverage to the downtown McGill University Residences every evening, from 18h00 to 06h00 and to the entire downtown campus during weekdays from 10h00 to 17h00.
MSERT also covers special requests such as McGill Intramural Hockey, Frosh, Carnival, 4Floors, and many others. Anyone may request our volunteer services by visiting our 'Request M-SERT' page.
