Thank you for your interest in joining the McGill Student Emergency Response Team (MSERT)! This description aims to provide you with some of the general information regarding the recruitment process. The full 2018-19 MSERT recruitment application guide will be posted in the summer of 2018 and recruitment will begin in September. We encourage anyone interested in developing their first aid knowledge and skills to apply to be a part of our service.
Our recruitment process occurs once each year, at the beginning of each academic year, and is split up into three separate sections: 1) An online application 2) Stage 1: A written standard first aid test and presentation of certification(s) 3) Stage 2: An interview and 3-4 simulated first aid scenarios/skills tests
To be eligible to apply to be a member of M-SERT, it is required for you to have:
A valid Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR C certification that was issued between the dates of November 1st 2015 and September 25th 2018 OR a certification that is deemed to be more advanced than Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR C (ie Canadian Red Cross First Responder) **OR an equivalent or more advanced certification from one of the following 4 first aid providers: Canadian Ski Patrol, Lifesaving Society, St. John Ambulance, Heart and Stroke **For a certification to be equivalent to the Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR C, the course must: 1)have been minimum 16 hours long, 2)have been from one of the other 4 national first aid providers [Canadian Ski Patrol, Lifesaving Society, St. John Ambulance, Heart and Stroke] 3) the course content must include sections on:
Q: Is there anything that I can do in the months leading up to recruitment that would help me prepare for recruitment?
A: Yes! Review all of the material covered in Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR C, in preparation of Stage 1 of recruitment. You can also start practicing the first aid skills taught in Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR C in preparation for the realistic scenarios tested in Stage 2 of recruitment!
Q: What do you look for in an applicant? Is there anything I can do, that would help improve my chances of getting on the team?
A: We look for a variety of qualities in our applicants, including; commitment, leadership, problem solving skills, empathy, discipline, communication skills, teamwork, creativity, and more. We also look for people who are receptive to feedback and are quick learners, as well as people able to think on their feet, and adapt to novel situations. The best way to improve your application is to demonstrate these qualities to our selection committee in your application and throughout each stage of recruitment.
